Kiln-Dried Firewood Explained

Understanding what makes each fire behave differently

Kiln-dried firewood is wood dried under controlled conditions to reduce its moisture before use. ECOFUEL™ firewood is kiln-dried to below 20% moisture and Woodsure Ready to Burn certified, so it arrives dry and ready to use. How it burns will still depend on the wood species, log size, appliance and airflow.

Our kiln-dried firewood range includes Birch, Oak and Ash. Birch lights readily and gives a bright, lively flame. Oak takes a little longer to establish, then burns more slowly and steadily with strong heat. Ash gives a familiar, dependable fire with steady heat and a clear flame.

There is no fixed burn time for a kiln-dried log. It depends on the wood species, log size, your stove or fireplace, airflow and how the fire is being run.

In our range, Birch is the more responsive option with a bright, lively flame. Oak generally burns more slowly and steadily once established, while Ash gives steady, dependable heat. If longer intervals between refuelling matter most, Oak is usually the better fit.

How long a log burns depends on the wood species, moisture content, log size, airflow and the stove or fireplace it is burned in.

Denser woods such as Oak generally burn more slowly and steadily once established, while Birch is more responsive and gives a brighter, livelier flame. Dry firewood also spends less of the fire’s energy driving moisture from the wood.

Airflow and how you operate the appliance will affect the burn rate too, so always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Yes. ECOFUEL™ kiln-dried firewood is suitable for wood-burning stoves, open fires, outdoor fire pits and other appliances designed for firewood. Always follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions, use a suitable fireguard with an open fire, and use fire pits outdoors only.

Moisture content has a big effect on how firewood behaves. ECOFUEL™ firewood is kiln-dried to below 20% moisture and Woodsure Ready to Burn certified, so you know it is dry and ready to use.

Drier firewood generally lights more readily and uses less of the fire’s energy evaporating moisture before useful heat is produced. Properly seasoned wood can also burn well if it is sufficiently dry, so the important thing is the actual moisture content rather than the label alone.

For us, the advantage is predictability: dry firewood, measured moisture and more consistent behaviour from one delivery to the next.

Sourcing, Standards and Impact

From where the wood comes from to how it burns

Our kiln-dried firewood is sourced from European forests managed under forestry regulations covering harvesting and regeneration. These rules are designed to control felling and protect forests, soil, water and surrounding habitats.

ECOFUEL™ firewood is also Woodsure Ready to Burn certified and complies with the relevant Air Pollution Act Regulations in Ireland.

Woodsure Ready to Burn certification confirms that our firewood meets the applicable requirements for moisture content, product testing and ongoing compliance. ECOFUEL™ firewood is certified at 20% moisture or less under the current firewood standard, BS EN ISO 17225-5:2026.

For customers, the practical benefit is simple. The firewood arrives dry and ready to use, without needing further seasoning at home.

Kiln-drying gives much more control over how firewood is dried. Traditional air-drying depends heavily on weather, airflow and storage conditions, and can take many months before the wood reaches a suitable moisture level.

Kiln-drying brings the moisture down under controlled conditions, giving a more consistent result throughout the year. ECOFUEL™ firewood is kiln-dried to below 20% moisture and supplied ready to use.

Where the kiln uses heat recovered from sawmill residues or other wood by-products, the drying process can also make productive use of material from the timber-processing cycle.

The practical result is more predictable moisture, less dependence on weather and consistently dry firewood when customers need it.

Kiln-dried firewood is still a combustion fuel, so burning it produces smoke and emissions. What kiln-drying helps control is the amount of moisture in the wood.

ECOFUEL™ firewood is Woodsure Ready to Burn certified at 20% moisture or less under BS EN ISO 17225-5:2026. It is also EPA registered, with the contents complying with the relevant Air Pollution Act Regulations.

How the fire burns in practice also depends on the appliance, airflow and how the fire is operated, so always use firewood in a suitable appliance and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

The Work Behind the Fire.

ECOFUEL™ started in a cold Galway warehouse in 2014. Since then, every winter has taught us something about the products, the service and what customers need when it’s time to light the fire.
